Dr.Ruhail Choudhury

As children grow, they begin to discover the world with their own minds and hearts. The desire for independence and individuality is natural — it marks the beautiful journey from childhood to adulthood. Yet, in this process of self-discovery, many young hearts often forget that behind every step they take stand two unwavering pillars of love and wisdom — their parents and teachers.

In today’s fast-changing world, where modern lifestyles, social media, and global influences shape our thoughts, respect for parents and teachers is, sadly, diminishing. Whether in a humble village patshala or a modern international school, some young students find amusement in mocking or disregarding their mentors. Likewise, the deep reverence once naturally felt for parents has weakened, replaced by impatience and misunderstanding.

But life, with all its lessons, eventually brings everyone to realize the truth — that no one understands us better than our parents, and no one wishes for our success more genuinely than our teachers. Parents may not always fulfill every desire, but their every action stems from love, sacrifice, and concern. Teachers may seem strict or demanding, but behind every correction lies their wish to see us rise higher.

Sadly, this realization often comes too late — when the moments to apologize or express gratitude have already passed.

Our schools may not teach this as a subject, yet it is among life’s most vital lessons: those who guide, nurture, and correct us are, in truth, our greatest well-wishers. If we look beyond our youthful pride and listen with our hearts, we will see that our parents and teachers are not obstacles in our path, but the very light that shows us the way forward.

By Dr. Ruhail Choudhury

Artificial Intelligence is not just a technological advancement but it is a transformative force reshaping every aspect of our lives. From how we work and learn to how we interact with the world, AI is becoming central to our future. For students and youth, this revolution presents both immense excitement and pressing questions. While AI promises new opportunities, it also brings challenges, especially the fear of job displacement. In this rapidly evolving landscape, time has become a critical factor. Millions of career-focused youth are racing not just to survive but to thrive by acquiring the right skills.

In India, the enthusiasm among young minds mirrors the spirit seen during the software boom of earlier decades. Once again, Indian youth are determined to lead on the global stage. With a strong foundation in STEM education and a culture of innovation, India holds tremendous potential to shape the future of AI.

However, talent alone is not enough. What young Indians need are robust opportunities, accessible training, inclusive education, supportive policies and industry collaboration. Institutions and the government must rise to the occasion by investing in AI-focused curriculum, creating more AI research hubs and fostering a startup ecosystem that encourages experimentation and innovation.

India has the talent to lead the AI revolution but it must be nurtured. By bridging the gap between curiosity and capability and between potential and opportunity, we can ensure that the youth of India are not just participants but global leaders in the AI era. The future belongs to those who are prepared and with the right support, Indian youth will not just keep pace but they will set the pace.

Before the world could do enough for the children suffering in war-affected Ukraine and several other nations, more deadly attacks were witnessed in various parts of Israel and Gaza. Innocent civilians including children are immensely suffering on both sides. This war has a high risk of spreading tension among neighbouring countries and involvement of powerful nations. Certainly, the world can not afford a third world war. Nations, leaders and global citizens need to think and act rationally. Impulsive acts and emotional decisions can lead the entire world to a catastrophic disaster.

At least 972 children in Ukraine have been killed or severely injured by violence since the war escalated in February 2022, Several children are killed or injured by every attack. These are just the figures that the UN has been able to identify. Obviously, the actual numbers would be much higher.

The primary cause of such massive casualties among children is undoubtedly the indiscriminate use of explosive weapons in densely populated areas. These weapons do not discriminate between civilians and combatants or adults and children, especially when used in populated civilian areas as witnessed in Ukraine, particularly in Mariupol, Luhansk, Kremenchuk and Vinnytsia.

The reckless and selfish decisions of the power-hungry, egoist, revengeful and powerful decision-making adults are putting the lives of millions of innocent children at extreme risk. It is known to all that there are no armed operations of these kinds that do not result in children being severely harmed.

Meanwhile, beyond the horror of children being killed or severely injured in such destructive attacks, almost every child in war-impacted countries has been exposed to deeply distressing events, and those children fleeing from violence as refugees are at significant risk of family separation, violence, exposure to crime, sexual exploitation and trafficking.

The education system is devastated by the escalation of hostilities across the war-impacted countries. Schools have been targeted or used by parties as hiding places, resulting in victim families not feeling safe to send their children to schools. Children are innocent and they are the future of the world, they need to be in school and learning meaningful lessons. Many experts believe that a single devastating war sows the seed for many more dreadful wars in future as the children who are the future grow up in a traumatic, hateful and toxic environment becoming more vulnerable to joining radical extremist groups that further promote extreme forms of violence on innocent people including children. It is therefore a vicious cycle which unless broken will only lead to a more dangerous future.

Though organizations like UNICEF continue to call for a ceasefire in war-affected nations and appeal for all children to be protected from such casualties, unfortunately, there seems to be very little impact of such appeals among warmongers.

Children in war zones urgently need, medical aid, food and drinking water, safety, stability, access to safe learning, child protection services and psychosocial support. But more than anything else children need ‘PEACE’.

By Ruhail Choudhury

Covid Lockdown had several significant impacts in the lives of children. Most children were confined within the four walls of their houses for several months and they were suddenly introduced to a whole new world of online education. Most parents were compelled to provide mobile phones or laptops with internet connections to support the need of the hour. While all our attention was focused towards the devastating effects of the pandemic, most of us actually failed or neglected to critically understand the transformation that children were going through.

When covid came under control, some significant impacts on children were realized. Surveys suggested that a huge percentage of children had gained significant amount of weight due to the change in their lifestyle during the lockdown period in particular. Online games became extremely popular and the level of involvement in many suggested serious addiction. PUBG, Free Fire, BGMI, doodle army, COD are some of the most popular online games among children today.

Experts believe online games has certain serious concerns on both physical and mental health of children, particularly if they are addicted to it. Some of the most basic concerns are that it reduces exposure of children from outdoor sports and games which are certainly good for healthy growing up of children. There is a huge difference between playing cricket or football in the outdoor environment or through online games. Long hours of continuous staring at illuminated bright mobile phone or laptop screens has serious adverse impacts on eyes. The increasing number of eye problems among children ranging from ‘vision loss’ to ‘dry eyes’ are also reported. Children are sometimes so engrossed while playing such games that they often don’t realise that their sitting postures are wrong and it may even lead to back or neck pains.

It has been observed that on account of highly realistic graphics, sound effects and synchronised actions while playing such games children actually get connected to the virtual environment and even start feeling and believing that they have actually entered the virtual world.

Some of the most popular online multiplayer games are extremely violent. Playing and participating in such games for long hours may even adversely impact the growing minds and develop cruel and violent mindsets. Children addicted to online games are often found to be more self-centred and introverted in their approach and they generally find it difficult to socialize or mix up with family members or make new friends. The catastrophic effects of children with extremely violent mindsets as found in disturbing incidents of shooting with guns in schools in America or a school student cutting the throat of a junior student in Delhi a few years back and many other gruesome criminal activities by children across the world.

Some of the online multiplayer games may have much more serious impacts on children than what we can normally think of. These online games are also channels of direct interactions and communications with unknown strangers participating from various locations of the world with possibly erroneous or fake identities. Children often pick up a lot of bad and abusive worlds from such strangers playing with them, and even there are serious risks of some adults disguised as children entering the games and exploiting children in various undesired ways. There are also risks of gambling and excessive spending through such online games.

It is therefore suggested that parents should ideally guide and track children and check what kind of online games they are playing, and how much time they are spending on such activities and thereby avoid risks related to over-exposure or addictions to such games for a more healthy growing up of children.

Author: Ruhail Choudhury

There may be several contradictory views and opinions in regard to early exposure of children to the diverse world of the internet through mobile phones, tablets or laptops particularly on account of unprecedented circumstances during covid pandemic that lead to a sudden unexpected and to some extent, unplanned introduction to internet aided online education and therefore the risks involved with children can not be completely ignored when hundreds of adults are becoming victims of innovative cyber crime and internet frauds every day.

Children are generally inquisitive in nature and the more you tell them to stay away from something, their interest to know about such things often increases. There are a lot of unsolicited sites which are not conducive for children and in spite of disclaimers and age enquiry buttons, practically there is no way children can be actually stopped from entering such sites. There are more threats than just the contents. Dating and friendship sites are often gateways to the world of blackmailing and extortion, even exploitation in various other forms.

There are several types of online frauds and crimes that are extremely dangerous but the one that is recently emerging as excessively risky for children is related to financial traps, particularly loan apps which are easy sources of instant money without any documentation or requiring any parental consent. Though this has been in the news and RBI & police department have taken it seriously but unfortunately there has not been much effort made by anyone to spread the required awareness among children in particular. Some of these fraudulent traps are so dangerous that they can even lead to cases of suicides or serious depression and mental health issues. It is a known fact that teenagers and children are often in desperate need or desire of buying things with amounts which could range from a few hundred to thousands of rupees and parents often may not agree to buy them such items for various logical reasons. Now with a mobile phone with internet in hand, it may only be a matter of a few clicks and sharing of some important information and giving access to the phone contacts or gallery that can easily get them a few thousand rupees in no time and absolutely unknowingly they may fall into a deadly trap of fraudsters.

Going by the reported incidents, there have been several instances where young students have downloaded some loan apps on their mobile and for quick money, they had casually clicked on various permission links and buttons on their mobile phones with a great deal of excitement and even got few thousands of rupees immediately credited to their bank accounts or through other phone payment methods. The standard modus operandi is to use local callers to first put pressure by threatening calls to extort exuberant amounts in return and even blackmail people with threats of sharing morphed photos or derogatory false information about victims with their phone contacts and in social media which often becomes an unmanageable crisis for many young students. There has been instances of attempts of suicides, extreme trauma and depression on account of such blackmailing.

In this dynamic cyber era when children are so overexposed to internet with google search, chatGPT, Instagram, whatsApp, emails, zoom & MS Team being an integral part of their daily lives, what becomes imperative for parents, teachers and school authorities is to take out time to educate them on the risks of internet frauds and also to help and guide them on their queries and do a balance between encouraging them for all the constructive use of the internet while also properly guide them on the risk of unwisely exploring or exposing to the darker side of the internet. On the psychological side it becomes extremely important to give children the required confidence so that in case of any crisis they have the courage and comfort of sharing their problems openly, as in most cases children starts thinking in the wrong directions or gets into trauma due to fear and inability to share their problems with their parents.
